Any tips on staying hydrated if one is already slightly diabetic (7.1 A1C)? Will the similar technique work or should we be more mindful of the sugar?

You can still drink as much as you need. Drink until you quench your thirst

WHO recommendations is 5 grams salt or 2g(2000mg) sodium.
